Lots of little figures

Last week, you saw the thinking which leads to my new project: basically, I’m collecting maternal figures from many different cultures to create my own textile bas relief. Here’s a few :

If we’re talking about maternal figures, we’ve got to start with the Virgin Mary, I suppose. Some of these (Above) look like she’s been up all night with the kid. The last photo on the right has a missing head. An especially bad night?

Then there’s the usual oh-isn’t-this-glorious? statues (Above)

(Above) These ivory bas relief carvings make me swoon…..

But maternal figures have been sculpted since pre-history.

From ancient Egypt

(Above) Inuit sculptures, ivory and stone

Japanese (and Chinese?) porcelain.

Various African nations, wood and ivory.

From India

Next week, you’ll see how I’m trying to put them together. In the meantime, here’s a photo of the just-about-finished piece, which I’m calling Common Cloth.

Stay safe. Stay sane.

Diane
